WikiCup 2023 September newsletter[edit]

The fourth round of the competition has finished, with anyone scoring less than 673 points being eliminated. It was a high scoring round with all but one of the contestants who progressed to the final having achieved an FA during the round. The highest scorers were

  • New York (state) Epicgenius, with 2173 points topping the scores, gained mainly from a featured article, 38 good articles and 9 DYKs. He was followed by
  • Sammi Brie, with 1575 points, gained mainly from a featured article, 28 good articles and 50 good article reviews. Close behind was
  • Thebiguglyalien, with 1535 points mainly gained from a featured article, 15 good articles, 26 good article reviews and lots of bonus points.

Between them during round 4, contestants achieved 12 featured articles, 3 featured lists, 3 featured pictures, 126 good articles, 46 DYK entries, 14 ITN entries, 67 featured article candidate reviews and 147 good article reviews. Congratulations to our eight finalists and all who participated! It was a generally high-scoring and productive round and I think we can expect a highly competitive finish to the competition.

Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 4 but before the start of round 5 can be claimed in round 5. Remember too that you must claim your points within 10 days of "earning" them and within 24 hours of the end of the final. If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. It would be helpful if this list could be cleared of any items no longer relevant. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove your name from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send.

I will be standing down as a judge after the end of the contest. I think the Cup encourages productive editors to improve their contributions to Wikipedia and I hope that someone else will step up to take over the running of the Cup. Sturmvogel 66 (talk), and Cwmhiraeth (talk)

Voltaic[edit]

Hello. Just an FYI that I've undone all the moves of Voltaic → Voltan. Voltaic seems to be the common usage in the party names (for example, compare the Google Books hits for Voltaic Progressive Front (several pages' worth) to Voltan Progressive Front (just four). While "Upper Voltan" was used for the country, "Voltan" doesn't seem to have been used much (perhaps it's a similar thing to Slovenian/Slovene). Cheers, Number 57 00:41, 27 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

As per ECI STATISTICAL REPORT ON GENERAL ELECTIONS, 1991[edit]

In the 'LIST OF PARTICIPATING POLITICAL PARTIES' content's 'NATIONAL PARTIES' section of this report, you can see at 7th position 'JD(S) Janata Dal (Samajwadi') has been written. Whereas, there are no mention of Samajwadi Janata Party (Rashtriya) named party even in state or REGISTERED(Unrecognized ) PARTIES section. So, this article Samajwadi Janata Party (Rashtriya) must be renamed to 'Janata Dal (Samajwadi)'
Report : ECI STATISTICAL REPORT ON GENERAL ELECTIONS, 1991|
Also, in 1990 - Chandra Shekhar's Oath Taking Ceremony As Prime Minister] you can hear that Pm Chandra Shekhar was introduced as Janata Dal (S) leader not SJP(R). [[User:King Ayan Das|King Ayan Das] (talk) 10:32, 10 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi King Ayan Das. So this needed to be clarified with use of references. I advice going through WP:V and WP:OR. I also gather that Chandrasekhar's faction used the name JD(S), but wasn't that an earlier name before regrouping as SJP(R)? The JD(S) in the 1991 ECI report did on one hand have national registry, on the other it only contested 2 seats in Assam. --Soman (talk) 10:49, 10 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
What do you mean of 'regrouping ' ? Can you explained it ? King Ayan Das (talk) 11:18, 10 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hi King Ayan Das. Looking through some sources, we find stuff like,
"After the Singh government collapsed following the withdrawal of support by the BJP, Chandra Shekhar also left the Janata Dal with 64 MPs and formed his new party Janata Dal (Samajwadi). [...] In 1998, he contested on the Samajwadi Janata Party (Rashtriya) ticket from Ballia and became a member of the 12th Lok Sabha." (Indian Express)
"The minority government led by VP Singh came to an end when Chandra Shekhar, along with Devi Lal, split from the Janata Dal, taking 64 of its 143 MPs to form the Samajwadi Janata Party (SJP)." (Business Standard)
"In 1990, after Singh resigned as PM, Chandra Shekhar ( inset) led a breakaway faction of the Janata Dal, Samajwadi Janata Party ( Rashtriya), and allied with Cong." (India Today)
"After the break with V P Singh, he formed the Samajwadi Janata Party, which for a brief while reunited with Janata Dal, but went back to its original shape and was headed by him till the end." (Rediff)
"The leadership was taken up by Chandrashekhar who formed the government with only 54 MPs, mostly defectors from JD, to form the Samajwadi Janata Party (SJP) [...] SJP was formed in 1990 under the leadership of Devi Lai and Chandrashekhar after the split in the JD. [...] The party was nearly routed gaining only five seats" "Chandrasekhar gathered enough support to cross the anti-defection33 barrier and formed the Janata Dal (Socialist). Later it was named Samajwadi Janata Party (SJP). V.P.Singh stepped down as the Prime Minister on 9 November, 1990. At a critical stage, Chandrasjfelihr, leader of the newly formed JD(S) was sworn in as the Prime Minister, with the outside support of the Cong.I" (PhD Thesis)
"Samajwadi Janata Party ( SJP ) , born of the Janata Dal ( Socialist )" (Jaffrelot)
"...Chandrasekhar and his JDS, now rechristened the Samajwadi Janata Party (SJP)" (Understanding India's New Political Economy: A Great Transformation?)
etc, etc. The issue of SJP(R) origins has always appeared a bit murky to me, but I think based on the material above the following can be stated, A) in 1990 Chandrasekhar splits from JD, forms a party called Janata Dal (Socialist) or Janata Dal (Samajwadi). B) The JD(S) is soon thereafter renamed Samajwadi Janata Party. C) SJP merges back in to JD. D) Later in the 1990s Chandrasekhar splits from JD again, now with SJP(Rashtriya) as his party. Arguably we should then consider the 1990 JD(S)/SJP and the later SJP(R) as two different parties. Would like to have some more references of what occurred between 1991 and 1998 though. As per the 1991 ECI Lok Sabha document, I'm not 100% convinced that the JD(Samajwadi) listed there is the same as Chandrasekhar's party. Or rather, whilst the registry might have originated from the 1990 split, probably this was by then no longer the party led by Chandrasekhar but a small grouping that had not gone along with merger back into JD? --Soman (talk) 16:43, 10 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Regarding the 1991 election, note that [Gowda joined] "... Janata Dal ( Socialist ) in 1991 and was among the five Samajwadi Janata Party MPs in the tenth Lok Sabha . He joined the Janata Dal in 1994 , a few months ahead of the assembly elections in Karnataka ." ([1]) So we have references stating that SJP won 5 seats in 1991, but looking at the 1991 ECI Lok Sabha document you shared H.D. Dewegowda and 4 other were elected on Janata Party ticket. So presumably the SJP either merged into whatever remained of JP before the 1991 election, or where allowed to contest on the ticket of the remnants of JP. --Soman (talk) 16:51, 10 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
"17 Apr 91 [ Text ] The Janata Dal - S and the Janata Party have merged to form the Samajwadi Janata Party . Dr. Subra- maniam Swamy , in a press release issued in New Delhi today , said the merger was formalized by the Janata Dal - S apex committee at its meeting last night . The press release adds that the Samajwadi Janata Party will contest elections on the chakra - haldhar [ wheel - plowman ] symbol . " ([2]) So, JD-S and the rump JP merges, calls themselves SJP, but uses the JP electoral registry to contest the 1991 election. --Soman (talk) 16:56, 10 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
"No. 7 and No. 9 have merged to form Samajwadi Janata Party . But their symbol this time is that of No. 7 ." (Election Archives and International Politics) --Soman (talk) 16:59, 10 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
December 2005, Chandrasekhar reconstitutes SJP(R) (TOI), 2008 new SJP(R) chief named after Chandrasekhar's death (OneIndia), 2010 SJP(R) merges into Congress (ZeeNews). SJP(R) appears as of 1995, see 1995 Manipur Legislative Assembly election. --Soman (talk) 17:11, 10 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
